GCSE Media Homework - Gender Representation
GCSE media homework - Gender representation
Part 1: Gender representation in video games
I think the main reasons for this lack of equality in video games are that males are seen as stronger and more powerful than females and that studies have shown that video games with male characters sell more than with female characters.

Part 2: Female oscar winners
- There is a wage gap between genders in Hollywood.
- An estimated 16 percent of women won oscars for playing wives, while only 2 percent of men won oscars for playing husbands.
- Six best actress oscars have been awarded to women playing sex workers, however no best actor has ever won for playing one.
- Average looking men can end up with supermodels on screen and it is completely normal.
- Women are taught to value their bodies and gender roles as mothers and wives over their minds.
Part 3: Patriarchal society
Patriarchal society - a system where men are in authority over women in all aspects of society.
I believe we used to live in a very patriarchal society. Today, there are still stereotypes and 'rules' surrounding each gender, such as that women are under more pressure to fit the standard of beauty than men, and that certain jobs are only meant for one gender.
Part 4: Judith Butler
Judith Butler’s theory ‘Gender as a performance’ suggests that we do not naturally act feminine and masculine, but are taught to by society. In adverts, for example, men are used to advertise cars and sports, while women are used to advertise beauty products and cleaning products, however, if a man and a woman were to be unaware of society around them, would the woman still act feminine and the man still act masculine? Both men and women in the media are portrayed as the ideal for their own gender, not the ideal for a person in general.

Part 5: Equality in the media
Media producers could create a society where there is more equality by using both men and women to advertise products and activities. They could show both men and women wearing makeup, both men and women driving cars, and advertise children’s toys for both boys and girls.
